Winona Ryder Professionally Winona Ryder was born in Winona Minnesota. The name she was given by her parents in honor of the town where her birthplace was. Michel Horowitz was her father and Cynthia Palmer, his mother, were both authors and editors. Ryder's dad was born into a Jewish family. Ryder considers her self Jewish. Her half-siblings are younger, Jubal and Sunyata. Ryder made the move together with her family to Mendocino County California at the age of seven. They didn't have electricity. There was no television books were the only way for Ryder for her time, and she began to read extensively. Ryder, then 12, attended the American Conservatory Theatre for acting classes in 1983. In the year she turned 15, Ryder was cast in Lucas her first big film. Ryder suffered from bullying at her high school. Her performing career, she thought, would help her. However, it didn't come to pass. Still she continued pursuing the goals she had set. In 1988, she got her big break in Tim Burton's Beetlejuice. Ryder kept playing successful roles in several movies. He was nominated for two Academy Awards were nominated, one for The Age of Innocence (1996).
